Claes Isacson Scholarship - validation and lasting research impact

“The Claes Isacson Scholarship is the most prestigious international scholarship for aspiring maritime lawyers and policy-makers”, says Robert Michael Veal, last year’s winner of the Claes Isacson Scholarship. Here is how it helped him in his research.

Robert is a PhD Candidate at the University of Southampton, specializing in the legal issues pertaining to the use of marine autonomous systems. He applied for the Claes Isacson scholarship to be used to support his research and was granted the stipend last autumn. Robert believes the scholarship acts as a sign of endorsement to his research.

“The fact that it is awarded by a world-leading P&I club validates the award and recipients gain the confidence of knowing that their research is of profound importance to those with vast experience and knowledge of the marine industry.”

Robert also emphasises that, since the scholarship is multipurpose, it can be a source of support in many ways.

“The award is flexible and can be used for everything from tuition to invaluable research materials, which all scholars need to succeed. It can also be used for travel to important academic and industry conferences. This enriches the research with the views of other academics and maritime professionals and the broad dissemination also ensures a lasting impact of the research.”

The Claes Isacson Scholarship is an annual scholarship that helps young people finance an education at university level, with a view to finding work within the shipping and marine insurance sector. The Scholarship relates to one of Gard’s key commitments of education and training – supporting our focus on sharing knowledge and expertise.
