Gard announces ship recycling statement and support

Gard today announced both the publication of its statement on sustainable ship recycling and their sign-up to the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI).

Published 04 March 2020

Rolf Thore Roppestad, Chief Executive, said “Ship recycling is both necessary and desirable and is considered the most sustainable way to end a ship’s life. There are, however, many considerations to be made to ensure that the dismantling of the ship does not endanger either people or the environment.

“Our board of directors has led the way in helping the group to establish a common approach to sustainable ship recycling. This is is aligned with our policy on sustainable business, code of ethics and business conduct and sets out our expectations and requirements for our Members and clients”.

At the same time, Gard has become a signatory to the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative, a cross-sectoral coalition calling for increased transparency around ship recycling practices.
