Gard strengthens its long standing presence in Japan

As a global organisation our offices around the world are central to our ability to help our members and clients manage risk and its consequences in their day to day operations. To be able to do so, we focus on the fundamentals and ensure that we have the resources and expertise available to service shipowners’ and operators’ needs.  As part of our long standing commitment to the Japanese shipping and maritime community, we have strengthened our organisation and network in Japan.

From January 2019, Tatsuya Funatsu, Claims Executive, is permanently based at our office in Imabari, providing local support to our members and clients in that region. We have also further strengthened the Defence team in our Tokyo office. Sammy Smallbone, an English and Hong Kong qualified lawyer, recently joined Gard as a permanent FDD Lawyer based in our Tokyo office. This makes our Tokyo based Defence team the strongest of any Club in Japan.

Sven Jensen, Vice President, Underwriting, has been responsible for underwriting and marketing in Japan since September 2018.  His permanent presence in Tokyo will enable us to develop our business and grow our presence in this important market even further.

Tadashi Sugimoto, Managing Director,  Gard (Japan) K.K says: “These changes will focus our efforts to further develop and build our long term partnerships with the Japanese shipping and maritime trading community, including the commodity, energy and offshore sectors. “
