Together with other industry companies, Gard contributes to funding of 3 PhD positions and 2 post-doctoral positions at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law over a 10-year period. This agreement represents a new initiative for a small academic environment that researches a field that is peripheral to many, but which has great financial significance for individuals and businesses.

Svein Buvik, Chief External Affairs Officer of Gard, said “The Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law is a very important institution for acquiring, developing and applying deep expertise in insurance law.  Many of the industry's strongest professionals are educated at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law.”

As part of the initiative, the faculty appoints an executive amanuensis / professor to hold a position in insurance law. A research project in insurance law - along with a user group with representatives from the industry - will be established. The purpose is to identify contemporary research topics for these positions.

Professor in insurance law, Trine-Lise Wilhelmsen stated in her speech that the institute lacks younger researchers working with insurance law, and that the agreement therefore contributes to both revitalization and rejuvenation of the academic environment. “It is important to retain insurance law both as a research and teaching subject", she said, recalling that much of the professional literature comes from the insurance law environment at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law.

Gard, on behalf of the Gard Insurance Association, is one of several contributors from the marine insurance industry together with Norwegian Hull Club, Assuranceforeningen Skuld, Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib, Nordisk Skibsrederforening, Swedish Hull Club, Forsikringsselskapet Alandia, Møretrygd Gjensidig forsikring, Tromstrygd Gjensidig Sjøforsikringsselskap and BAHR.
