The International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) and CINS have now agreed an amendment to these guidelines and Paragraph 3.1 of the guidelines now reads as follows (amendment underlined):
The relevant text in the new version is as follows:
“A package limit of 45 kg net weight, or 100 lb under US measurement, in drums and a limit on the maximum payload of calcium hypochlorite per container not exceeding 14 tonnes (see footnote 4) is stipulated in these Guidelines.”
This amendment reflects the use of 100 lb drums by US shippers and being equivalent to 45.36kg the weight differential against the recommended 45 kg limit is considered acceptable.
We once again take the opportunity to encourage container line members to enquire about CINS membership, the main purpose of which is to highlight and address risks posed by certain cargoes and/or packing failures in order to improve safety in the liner shipping industry.
