Counterfeit alcohol is a prevalent problem in Indonesia. According to the Jakarta Globe newspaper, there has been a spate of deaths in West Java in the past couple of months caused by the drinking of alcohol containing methanol or other hazardous substances. Although police and local authorities across Indonesia are increasing their efforts to crack down on the production and distribution of counterfeit alcohol, the risk of poisoning from tainted alcohol continue to be high.
Members and clients with vessels calling at ports in Indonesia, and Java in particular, should be aware of the widespread availability of dangerous counterfeit alcohol in Indonesia and inform their Masters and crew of the risks associated with drinking counterfeit alcohol.
